Instructions:

  • 1. Prepare the Onions:

Peel the onions and trim off the top (stem) while keeping the root intact so the onion holds together.
Make cuts into the onion from the top down, but do not cut all the way through. Start by slicing into quarters, then slice each quarter into thinner sections. You want to create “petals” that open up like a flower.

  • 2. Soak the Onions:

Place the cut onions in ice water for about 30 minutes. This helps them open up more and creates better “blooming.”

  • 3. Preheat the Air Fryer:

Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes.

  • 4. Prepare the Breading Station:

In one bowl, mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.
In another bowl, whisk the eggs and milk together.
In a third bowl, place the panko breadcrumbs.

  • 5. Coat the Onions:

Drain the onions and pat them dry.
Coat each onion with the flour mixture, making sure to get in between the petals. Shake off any excess.
Dip the floured onion into the egg mixture, then coat it in the panko breadcrumbs. Press the breadcrumbs gently to adhere to the petals.

  • 6. Air Fry the Onions:

Spray the onions with olive oil to ensure they get crispy.
Place the onions in the air fryer basket, making sure they have enough space around them to cook evenly.
Air fry for 10-15 minutes, or until the onions are golden and crispy. You can check and flip them gently halfway through for even cooking if needed.

  • 7. Make the Dipping Sauce:

While the onions are cooking, whisk together the mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, paprika, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and lemon juice.
Taste and adjust seasoning as desired.

  • 8. Serve:

Serve the baby blooming onions hot with the dipping sauce on the side!

These Baby Air Fryer Blooming Onions are crispy, flavorful, and perfect for sharing. They are much lighter than the traditional fried version but still deliver that same great crunch!
