Gourmet French Onion Soup Burgers

Directions:

In a large skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they begin to soften.
Sprinkle the onions with sugar and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized, about 20-25 minutes. Add the Worcestershire sauce and cook for an additional 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat and set aside.
Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. Season the ground beef with salt and pepper and form into 4 patties.
Grill the patties for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty to melt.
Toast the burger buns on the grill for about 1 minute.
Assemble the burgers by placing a patty on the bottom half of each bun, topping with caramelized onions, and finishing with the top half of the bun. Garnish with fresh thyme if desired.
